There’s nothing quite like a Cinderella story to thrill even the least interested basketball fan. NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. It seems like every March there’s a new team to check out, whose no-holds-barred play reaches new heights for a once unheard of program. This year’s Cinderella Story is Jersey City’s own St. Peter’s University, located at 2641 John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
The St. Peter’s Peacocks men’s basketball team stunned basketball fans across the country with their game. Winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship earned them a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The first round saw the 15th-seeded Peacocks take on the No. 2 seed University of Kentucky. The Peacocks won 85-79 in overtime, eliminating the eight-time tournament champions. The Peacocks next faced No. 7 seed Murray State, winning 70-60. It was during the postgame media session after that game that Peacocks head coach Shaheen Holloway gave us that now-famous quote: “I’ve got guys from New Jersey and New York. You think we’re scared of anything?
The Peacocks will face the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday, March 25 at 7:09 p.m. The game will air on CBS and in many bars across Hoboken and Jersey City.
