EWING, N.J. – The TCNJ softball team swept through New Jersey City at Dr. June Walker Field on Saturday afternoon with their fast hitting and dominant throw. It’s a combination that’s usually tough to beat, and the Lions used this combination effectively to send the Gothic Knights into a pair of wins. The Lions won Game 1, 9-0, in five sets and Game 2, 12-1. The Lions served as visitors as the games were originally scheduled for the NJCU but were moved to the TCNJ due to field conditions.
Game 1: TCNJ 9, NJCU 0 (5 innings)
TCNJ scored in the five innings it won, and the Lions took a 1-0 lead early in the first. Julia Mayernik doubled a left with one out, and she stole the third after the second out. She scored from third place by Kayla Hillenbrand Simple RBI in the center.
The Lions added two more in the second inning on another two-out hit. Lauren Conroy and Camryn Davies each reached and were in position to score after Lindsay Zengel’s sacrifice caries. Who magnificently set the table for Kaci Neveling two outs, two single runs left. It made TCNJ 3-0.

The Lions pushed the game into lenient territory with a fifth-inning three-run. McKayla Yard led off with his own home run to make it 7-0, and Davies followed by scoring on Neveling’s single after hitting his own single. TCNJ capped the score on Julia Kinally’s RBI single to score Neveling.
Mayernik was 2 for 4 with the two extra hits. Neveling and Hillenbrand also had two hits apiece. Neveling had three RBIs to lead the club.
Game 2: TCNJ 12, NJCU 1
The Lions scored four runs in the top of the first inning to eliminate the drama early in Game 2. Each of the first six Lions to come to the plate reached base, and that included five singles and one walk. Standing second, Neveling raced home on a Davies single, never stopping as she rounded third to score the first run for TCNJ.
Hillenbrand followed with an RBI single to score Davies two batters later to make it 2-0. Between those two hits, Mayernik had a base hit and she scored with Kinally on Carifi’s single. That capped the first set with four runs.
In the second, Davies served as the frame pivot with a bunt single that allowed Neveling to score, and she then scored in the inning on Hillenbrand’s field. Mayernik doubled Davies in the third, allowing him to score on the ground.
TCNJ added solo scores in each of the third and fourth innings to push the lead to 8-0. In the third, Conroy started with a double, and she then scored on a double steal. In the fourth, Alexis Rizo scored a single and then scored on Hillenbrand’s single to make it 8-0.
